Santa Catalina Island is a rocky island 22 miles off the coast of Los Angeles with a small principal city, Avalon.

The first European on the island was the Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who, in 1542 named it San Salvador. Sebastian Vizcaino rediscovered the island on the eve of Saint Catherine´s day in 1602, and named it Santa Catalina.

In 1919, the chewing-gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. purchased the island. He invested in protecting its natural resources and built the now iconic movie theatre “Casino”. The island´s flora and fauna are impressive, especially the bison herd, which since their introduction in 1920, have thrived on Santa Catalina.

Visitors can travel to the island, arriving at Avalon Bay by the Catalina Express ferry, or by plane arriving at Avalon´s “Airport in the Sky”. Fans of cars and crowded streets beware, the mode of transportation on the island is primarily by golf cart.

The Subtropical climate, Mediterranean style boutiques, restaurants, art galleries, golf course and Descanso Beach Club, bring more than one million visitors to this extraordinary island annually.
